When it first opened in 1869, the University of California had 40 students and 10 faculty members. Today, the UC system has over 295,000 students, 265,000 faculty and staff, and 2.0 million alums employed and live worldwide.

UC governance and leadership
The 21st president of the University of California is Michael V. Drake, M.D. He is in charge of the ten chancellors on campus. He answers to the 26-member Board of Regents of the University of California, which is selected by the governor of California and has a 12-year tenure.
Being a leader
Under independent administration, UC has prospered for over 150 years, enabling university leadership to prioritize the health of UC and its students.
Regents’ Board
The 26-member Board of Regents oversees tuition and fees, budgetary matters, and university rules at the University of California. The board chooses the president of the institution and selects a student regent for a one-year term. Three Regents’ Committees have two staff advisors who serve two-year terms as non-voting advisers.
Senate of Academics
The Academic Senate represents university faculty. The regents have given it the authority to make decisions about academic policies, such as approving courses and establishing prerequisites for entrance, degrees, and certificates. Additionally, the Senate advises the administration on finances, promotions, and faculty hires.
The President’s Office
The University of California’s system-wide headquarters, the Office of the President, oversees its commercial and financial operations and supports its academic and research goals throughout its campuses, labs, and medical facilities. In August 2020, Michael V. Drake took office as the 21st president of the University of California. He is in charge of the director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and the ten chancellors on campus.

Our campuses are transitioning to zero-emission, hybrid vehicles. Additionally, we are reducing commuting in single-occupancy cars by 20%.
Healthy planet, good food
UC is setting the standard for serving sustainably farmed and ethically sourced food in student dining halls.
No waste, no plastics
Packaging foam is no longer used, and single-use plastics are being phased out.

California’s objectives
As part of its ambitious 2030 targets, UC is expected to produce 1.2 million degrees in just 15 years, including 20% more graduate and undergraduate degrees. In addition, we’re investing in faculty and research, raising graduation rates, and reducing equity gaps.
Practical education
All campuses have undergraduates involved in service learning, internships, artistic projects, and research. This experiential learning approach, a UC characteristic, exposes students to the outside world, sparking innovative ideas, creating job possibilities, and yielding significant benefits for California.
Research at the undergraduate level
UC students work with some of the brightest minds in the world, have unparalleled access to research, and design and direct their projects. Undergraduate research at the UC Davis Bodega Marine Lab contributes to our knowledge of the ocean’s climate and coastline.
Innovative endeavours
Undergraduates at UC are actively involved in various creative disciplines, including writing, mediamaking, visual art, music, drama, and more. Making education accessible
A degree from one of the top public institutions in the world is also among the most reasonably priced at UC. Regardless of family income, our comprehensive financial aid programs are made to make a degree accessible. More than half of undergraduate students in California do not pay any tuition.
The route to UC debt elimination
By 2030, UC wants to ensure that all California undergraduates graduate from college debt-free. The debt-free plan will use work-study, grants, and scholarships to pay for all of UC’s expenses, including housing and food. With its Affordability Initiative, UCLA is spearheading the effort.
Developing a career and funding college
Many students must work to pay for college. The Learning-Aligned Employment Program (LAEP) ensures that paid research jobs do double duty, helping students advance their careers and pay for their studies.

A place where first-generation students flourish
Enrolling first-generation students and helping them succeed once they arrive are priorities for UC. Indeed, more UC undergraduates than any other selective university in the nation—37 per cent—are among the first in their families to enrol in college. Additionally, first-generation students do well at UC, earning more than their parents within five years of graduation and graduating at high rates.
The pipeline to community colleges
More undergrads than any other similar university in the nation attend UC, with nearly one in three coming from a community college. Additionally, transfer students perform exceptionally well at UC, graduating at even higher rates than their freshmen counterparts and succeeding in the workplace.
Encouraging Californians
The proportion of California residents enrolled in UC’s nine undergraduate programs has risen to 83.4%. Special programs and financing for undocumented students, Native Americans, foster youngsters, veterans, parents, and other underrepresented groups guarantee that everyone has the opportunity to learn at the highest levels. Our student body reflects the rich variety of our state.
